When we are planning and finally decide to decorate our house (yes; that one we have finally managed to call “our”), mistake is often labeled as “beginners’ mistakes” in terms of election, environment and decoration of our home. We are aware you are not a professional decorator, so here we provide you the most common mistakes that experts in decoration, architects and designers advice you to avoid when we get down to work.

  • Purchasing a modern but uncomfortable sofa. That couch which is the same as the one you saw in that film, that you loved so much that you could not stop thinking about. Consider the main statement: a sofa is a resting place. You relax, watch TV and if it’s really good, it is the first choice for a nap. In spite of many guests you would have throughout the week, whoever that looks for a sit it is because they want to be more comfortable than staying upright.
  • Painting the entire room with a color you love, without testing it before. Believe us; a bad painting ruins an entire budget reform. That will become to real tears if when you walk into the disaster area, all you see is purple, or the brighter yellow was not what you expected; and nobody would be painting a house in order to have to walk through it with sunglasses. Please take note of this: look at the light, forget about trends and test the color before.
  • A wrong organization system. You have gotten a beautiful cabinet above the refrigerator, but Mother Nature decided to reward you with a lovely smile but with a few centimeters tall. In other words, in that cabinet you have stored all utensils you use daily and you are not able to reach. Note that in addition to beauty, the organization in your house has to be functional. The items you use more must be accessible. Hide away the most useless stuff in uncomfortable places so you won’t need to reach to everyday.
  • Place the pictures too high, or too low. And please, don’t forget they need to be always straight. It may sound silly, but some people do not have an eye used to righteousness lines. We do not know what the perfect height is, as it depends on many factors. Measure distances fifty times if necessary.
  • Forgetting about light. It is the quintessential decorative element (you will find it in most decoration and remodeling articles). There is never too much, but influences in everything: colors, mirrors, furniture or reflections on the television screen.
  • Buy that device you wanted so badly, because you saw your mother’s neighbor also had it at her house and looks beautiful at her garden, but it’s useless for your needs. Not everything you saw at a department store will be useful, but at least, think twice before purchasing.
  • Bet on white. If there is a color that is a sure hit, is white. Use it as much as you want, but remember how much you like red wine and, if it falls, it will stay forever. White demands often cleanings.
  • Pictures. Mothers are always happy while looking for that picture frames than you think you are out of date. Pictures give personality and warmth to your home, but the abuse of them would give the impression that your house is a kind of repressed gallery instead.
  • To think that dark colors reduce space and light. If you know how to use dark colors it can be perfect. The key is to use the window wall. Being backlit, it does not reduce luminosity to the space and, in contrast, when night comes it is just perfect. If you paint with dark color a wall that has no window, we recommend decorating it with a mirror to reflect the light so that it can act as a window.
  • Place a curtain is mandatory. It is true that curtains gives elegance sense and create intimate environments, but if a window framed beautiful views, you do not need to cover it with curtains, so that decision is only up to you.
